Class V Social Science T1 U1 Our Earth Textbook Solutions

1. OUR EARTH

EVALUATION

I. Fill in the blanks.

1. The distance between the earth and the sun is ___________.

Ans: nearly 150 million kilometre.

2. _____________ are caused due to the revolution of the Earth.

Ans: Seasons

3. The continent which is covered by ice is _____________.

Ans: Antarctica

4. The biggest continent is ______________.

Ans: Asia

5. _____________ is described as Red Planet.

Ans: Mars

6. ____________ Percentage of our earth is covered by salt water.

Ans: 71

II. Match the Following:

Smallest Continent

Australia

Blue Planet

Earth

Neptune

Farthest planet

Seasons

Earth’s revolution

Day and night

Earth’s rotation

III. Answer the following:

1. What do you know about universe?

Ans:

Millions of years ago an explosion called the big bang occurred. Numerous stars and celestial bodies came into existence by that massive explosion. These celestial bodies together are called the Universe. It is also referred to as cosmos.

2. Define solar system?

Ans:

Our solar system consists of the sun (the star), 8 planets, 63 moons, millions of smaller bodies like asteroids and comets. These objects are gravitationally bound.

3. How did the Earth form?

Ans:

  • Approximately 4.54 billion years ago, Solar System was a cloud of dust and gas known as Solar Nebula.

  • Due to an explosion, these particles collapsed and began to spin having the sun at centre.

  • The bigger particles which revolve around the sun are called  planets. Thus the planet Earth formed.

4. Distinguish between Rotation and Revolution?

Ans:

Rotation

Revolution

The movement of the earth on its own axis is called rotation

The movement of the earth around the sun on its axis which is tilted about 231/2  is called revolution.

Day and night are caused by earth's rotation

Seasons are caused by earth's revolution.

5. How many oceans are there in the earth?

Ans:

There are five oceans on the earth.

They are

  • Pacific Ocean,

  • Atlantic Ocean,

  • Indian Ocean,

  • Arctic Ocean and

  • Southern Ocean.

IV. Answer in detail:

1. Write about the solar system.

Ans:

Solar system consists of the sun, the planets, their moons, dwarf planets, asteroids and comets. These objects are gravitationally bound.

There are 8 planets in our solar system.

Gaseous planets:

The outer planets are Gaseous planets.

They are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune

Terrestrial planets:

The inner -rocky planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. They are called Terrestrial planets.

Frozen planets are Uranus and Neptune.

Mercury is the smallest planet.

Venus is called Earth’s twin.

Mars is the Red planet.

Earth is the Blue planet.

Saturn is the Ringed planet

2. Write about the Planet Earth in detail.

Ans:

Earth is called the Blue planet and it is  the third planet from the sun and the fifth largest in the solar system. Day and night are caused due to the earth’s rotation. Seasons are caused by Earth’s revolution. Life is possible only on earth because of the presence of land, air and water. The distance is nearly 150 million kilometers between the sun and the earth. Around 71 percent of our Earth is covered by salt water and that is called the Ocean. Only 2.5 percent of water is fresh and 1 percent of it is easily accessible. So far, earth is the only planet where human beings live.
