II. Fill in the blanks.

1. Earth's surface is covered by ____________ % of water.

Ans: 70

2. The driest places on the Earth are ____________.

Ans: desert

3. Fixation and absorption are the main functions of ____________.

Ans: root

4. Primary organs of photosynthesis are ____________.

Ans: green leaves

5. Taproot system is present in ____________ plants.

Ans: dicotyledonous

III. State True or False. If false, correct the statement.

1. Plants can live without water.

Ans: False

Plants can not live without water.

2. All plants have chlorophyll.

Ans: False

Some plants do not have chlorophyll.

3. Plants have three parts: the root, the stem and leaves.

Ans: False

Plants have two main parts; Root system and Shoot system

4. Mountain is an example for freshwater habitat.

Ans: False

Mountain is an example for forest habitat.

5. Root is modified into spines.

Ans: False

Leaves and stems are modified into spines.

6. Green plants need sunlight.

Ans: True.

IV. Match the following.

Mountain

Himalayas

Desert

Dry place

Stem

Branches

Photosynthesis

Leaves

Fibrous root

Monocot

V. Arrange the following in correct sequence.

1. Leaf – Stem – Root – Flower

Ans: Root → Stem → Leaf → Flower

2. Transpiration – Conduction - Absorption – Fixation

Ans: Fixation → Absorption → Conduction → Transpiration

VI. Answer very briefly.

1. Classify the plants on the basis of their habitats.

Ans:  Based on their habitats plants can be classified into

Terrestrial habitat and

Aquatic habitat

2. Mention few desert plants.

Ans:

Cactus

Aloe

Bryophyllum

3. Define the term habitat.

Ans:

Each and every organism needs a place to live and reproduce. Such a dwelling place is called habitat.

4. Relate the terms leaves and photosynthesis.

Ans:

Leaves have green pigment called chlorophyll in it and leaves prepare food by the process called photosynthesis.

VII. Answer briefly.

1. Why do we call jasmine plant, a twiner?

Ans:

Jasmine plants have weak stems, they cannot stand straight on their own. They must climb on any support to survive. So we are calling it as a twiner.

2. Compare the taproot and fibrous root systems.

Ans:

Taproot

Fibrous root

It consists of a single root, which grows straight down into the ground. Smaller roots, called lateral roots arise from the taproot.

It consists of a cluster of roots arising from the base of the stem. They are thin and uniform in size.

Ex. Dicotyledonous plants

Bean,Neem, Mango

Ex. Monocotyledonous plants

Grass,Paddy, Maize

3. Distinguish between terrestrial and aquatic habitats.

Ans:

Terrestrial Habitats

Aquatic habitats

Terrestrial habitats are found on land like forest, grassland and desert.

Aquatic habitats are permanently covered by water and areas that are occasionally covered by water.

They are as big as a continent or as small as an island.

More than 70% of earth's surface is covered by oceans.

Ex.Scrub jungles

Ex. Sea grasses,phytoplanktons

4. List out the plants present in your school garden.

Ans:

Asoka tree, Mayflower tree, Crotons etc.

VIII. Answer in detail.

1. Make a list of the functions of root and stem.

Functions of the stem:

Stem

  • Supports the branches, leaves, flowers and fruits.

  • Transports water and minerals from roots to upper aerial parts of the plant.

  • Transports the prepared food from leaves to other parts through stem.

  • Stores food as in the case of sugarcane.

Functions of the Root:

Root

  • Fixes the plant to the soil.

  • Absorbs water and minerals from the soil.

  • Some plants like carrot and beet root store food in root.

2. Complete the map by filling the blanks.
